Neilia Hunter grew up in Skaneateles, New York, in a close-knit, academic family. Bright and compassionate, she excelled at Syracuse University, where she immersed herself in studies and campus life. Her poise and ambition reflected the qualities that would later inspire Biden’s drive for leadership and service.
Biden, from a modest background, was struck by Neilia’s warmth and confidence. Days after meeting her, he told her he would marry her — a promise he kept. Their marriage became a true partnership built on love, ambition, and shared ideals.
As Biden pursued law school and early political dreams, Neilia balanced teaching and motherhood, raising their three young children while helping him navigate campaign life. Biden credited her advice and belief in him as key to his first Senate victory at age 29.
Their joy, however, was shattered in December 1972 when Neilia and their infant daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car crash. Their sons, Beau and Hunter, survived with serious injuries.
The tragedy nearly ended Biden’s political career before it began, but his commitment to his sons kept him moving forward. He took his Senate oath at their hospital bedside and began commuting daily from Delaware to Washington.
